They may not have been old enough to vote but school students let their voices be heard in Monday\u2019s federal election.<\/p>\n

More than 1.1 million elementary and secondary school students from across Canada including just over 38,000 in Manitoba took part in Student Vote Canada 2019, coinciding with the 2019 federal election.<\/p>\n

After learning about the electoral process, researching the parties and platforms, and debating Canada\u2019s future, students cast their ballots for the official candidates running in their school\u2019s riding. As of 4 p.m. Monday, 1,167,110 votes were reported from 7,747 schools, with results from all 338 federal ridings.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe are thrilled with the turnout for Student Vote Canada 2019,\u201d said Taylor Gunn, President and CEO of CIVIX Canada in a press release. \u201cWe are grateful for all the teachers that dedicated time and energy to cultivating the next generation of voters.\u201d<\/p>\n

CIVIX Canada is a non-partisan registered Canadian charity dedicated to strengthening democracy through citizenship education among school-aged youth.<\/p>\n

According to the student votes, the Liberal Party and leader Justin Trudeau were the big winners, taking 109 seats to form a minority government despite having the lowest popular vote among the three major parties. Jagmeet Singh and the NDP would form the official opposition with 98 seats, edging out Andrew Scheer and the Conservatives with 94 seats.<\/p>\n

Rounding out the results, the Green Party took 28 seats and the Bloc Quebecois won nine.<\/p>\n

In Manitoba, the Conservative blue wave was stopped at the Perimeter \u2014 at least in the student vote \u2014 with the NDP winning five of the eight seats in Winnipeg.<\/p>\n

\u201cElections Canada is proud to have helped make Student Vote Canada 2019 possible,\u201d said St\u00e9phane Perrault, Chief Electoral Officer of Canada. \u201cThis program is one of the ways we educate future voters and help raise active citizens.\u201d<\/p>\n

Number crunching<\/p>\n

\u2013 The Liberal Party took 22.3% of the popular vote and won 109 seats, forming a minority government. Justin Trudeau won in his riding of Papineau.<\/p>\n

\u2013 The NDP will form the official opposition with 24.8% of the popular vote and 98 seats. Jagmeet Singh won his seat in Burnaby South.<\/p>\n

\u2013 The Conservative Party took 25.0% of the popular vote and won 94 seats. Andrew Scheer won his seat in Regina \u2014 Qu\u2019Appelle.<\/p>\n

\u2013 The Green Party took 18.2% of the popular vote and won 28 seats. Elizabeth May won her seat in Saanich \u2014 Gulf Islands.<\/p>\n

\u2013 The Bloc Qu\u00e9becois took 1.3% of the popular vote and won nine seats. Yves-Fran\u00e7ois Blanchet did not win his seat in Beloeil \u2014 Chambly.<\/p>\n

\u2013 In Manitoba, 38,189 participating students elected six NDP, five Conservative and three Liberal candidates. All of the Conservative victories were outside of Winnipeg while the NDP won five of the eight seats in the capital.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
