Student Vote NWT 2015

Just a month after participating in the federal election, students from schools across the Northwest Territories are once again preparing to vote in a parallel election on Monday, November 23.

Student Vote NWT 2015 offers those under the voting age the opportunity to voice their opinions on who should form the next territorial government.

The civic education organization CIVIX is organizing a Student Vote parallel election for elementary and high schools for the 2015 NWT territorial election with support from the Government of Canada.

Fifteen schools are registered to participate, representing 13 NWT electoral districts. As many as 650 students are expected to cast their own ballots on Monday.

Packages of election resources, including ballot boxes, voting screens, posters and ballots for each individual electoral district have been sent to registered schools. These will be used to recreate election day for students to practice the skills and habits of engaged citizenship.

Pedagogical resources have been posted online and include three territorially-focused lesson plans, complete with PowerPoints, worksheets, handouts and other activities. These materials provide an overview of the roles and responsibilities of government and of the NWT’s historical context.

The program encourages students to directly engage with candidates and local issues. CIVIX asked all candidates to comment briefly about themselves, their qualifications for the position of MLA, and the issues that they will prioritize should they be elected. Twenty-six of them responded and their answers, along with links to find out more about each candidate are accessible on the “Candidates” page of the website.

External links to additional online resources – such as local news sites, blogs and Elections NWT – are also available at www.studentvote.ca/nwt2015.

If you would like to your school or class to join Student Vote NWT, it is not too late! Please contact us at hello@civix.ca or by calling 1-866-488-8775 and electronic copies of ballots for your electoral district will be sent for you right away.

CIVIX wishes all schools and candidates participating in Student Vote NWT 2015 a good final stretch to the territorial campaign. See you at the polls on Monday!
